Fleet Wars will have the following gametypes when fully implemented:
- Armada - team-based gameplay with ship classes, player skill levels, and an extreme requirement for strategic and tactical teamwork. Fleets clash in combat gameplay as you've never played before.
- Chaos - players fight in chaotic free for alls, with all players piloting the same ship.
- Duel - players take turns fighting 1-on-1, with the winner fighting the next in line. This is where pilots test their dogfighting skills.
- Racing - players race laps through rings to be the first to complete the entire circuit. Pilots looking to test their maneuvering skills come here.

Installing the latest version is very simple. Download the distribution file from our downloads page, and then:
- on Windows XP, unzip the contents of the zip file to your My Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame folder
- on Windows Vista, unzip the contents of the zip file to your Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3\UTGame folder
Once installation is complete, you should be able to start up UT3 as normal, login to your profile, and see Fleet Wars GameType listed in the gametypes list.

Using a gamepad with Fleet Wars requires a number of steps with the current UT3 version, 1.1:
- In UTEngine.ini, under section [WinDrv.WindowsClient], make sure that AllowJoystickInput is set to 1
- In UTFleetWars.ini, under section [FleetWars.FW_PlayerInput], make sure that bUsingGamepad is set to 1
It is important to know that when using a gamepad or joystick by this method, it will override mouse control in Fleet Wars.
For those wanting to use their XBox 360 controller (as UT3 has specific support for it), you will want to do the following:
- Download this text file that has a basic setup
- Open up your UTFleetWars.ini file
- Under [FleetWars.FW_PlayerInput], at the end of the Bindings list, add the contents of the text file
